Soles 4 Souls Ottawa Shoe Charity Launch April 2012 at Local Heroes

Speech by Donald Robichaud Eastern Director for Souls 4 Soles Canada. In attendance were Jim Watson, Peter Hume, Stephen Creighton, Tasso Vasilas, David Patafie and Alison Wesley-James. Our goal at Soles4Souls Canada is to collect one million pairs of shoes in every province in Canada within 10 years. And today is the culmination of 6 months effort to begin that campain!!!!!   In the spring of 2009 Jim Belshaw and I sat down for our regular weekly business discussion. Jim owns Roy's Shoes in Kelowna, BC. The topic was marketing and the discussion was what could be done to raise the profile of Roy's Shoes in the community. We developed three ideas and the third idea was a little thing called Soles4Souls. We did not know a lot about the organization called Soles4Souls.
Jim had done some research on the web and wanted my opinion. When I checked out their website, I liked the idea immediately. They already had marketing materials available and it seemed like such a simple idea. A plan for Soles4Souls Kelowna was developed for the spring of 2010. We had one thought.....this is either a great idea or a complete bust. From our research on the web we knew that shoes had been collected in Canada but mostly in small amounts. A couple of hundred pairs or so!!! As the campaign took off we knew we were in over our heads. We simply were not ready for how the public responded. We had hit a hot button. People were showing up with green garbage's full of shoes. The collection boxes were overflowing all over the Okanagan valley and we had to arrange pick up of the shoes immediately at many locations. We were so naive we didn't even have a facility to warehouse the shoes to be sorted. The fist week we collected 10,000 pairs of shoes!!! In that first year a community of 140,000 people donated over 40,000 pairs of shoes. With the success of 2010 we decided to do it again in 2011. The year two program was expanded throughout the interior of BC and was re-branded as "The Million Shoe Mission". At final count, 65,000 pairs of shoes were collected. In the spring of 2011, I approached Jim with the idea of taking the campaign national. I was expanding my company, Floodlight Business Solutions Group across Canada and I felt we could take Soles4Soles Canada-wide within 3 years. Jim approached Soles4Souls headquarters in the USA and they gave us their blessing. In early 2012 we launched our new website www.Soles4SoulsCanada.com. And now, we are proud to announce that this year as part of "The Million Shoe Mission", we will be collecting shoes in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. Our national goal for this year is 400,000 pairs of shoes. The long-term goal is to have April declared as Soles4Soles Month in Canada. The Million Shoe Mission will eventually be active in every province and Territory. Within 10 years, we hope to collect over 10 million pairs of shoes across this great country of ours. Since its inception in 2004 in the Us, Soles4Souls has distributed over 17 million pairs of donated shoes. It has responded to more than 40 natural disasters worldwide with crisis relief aid, including Hurricane Katrina, the Haiti earthquake in 2010, the Japan earthquake, and the Alabama and Missouri tornadoes in 2011. With 1 in 4 people around the world living in poverty, the shoe charity also assists individuals living in developing nations, along with the U.S. and Canada, who cannot afford shoes. Our goal this year in Ottawa is 200,000 pairs of shoes.

What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?

Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first.

You are all probably familiar with the Christmas time story of Dr. Seuss', The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

Dr. Seuss was a favorite at our house and as my family gets a little bit older, we find we all need a break from the commercialism of the holiday season.

In moving some boxes recently I came across a copy of the now famous Dr Seuss tale and in reading the book it brought back great memories of watching the original show on TV with my daughters.

There is a part near the end that has always moved me and I trust this holiday season it will help you with what’s really important!!!

From Dr. Seuss:

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so?

It came without ribbons. It came without tags.

It came without packages, boxes or bags.

And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore.

Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before.

What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store?

What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?

As the holiday season approaches, we at Floodlight would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support.

It is business associates and customers like you who make our jobs a pleasure and keep our company successful.

We value our relationship with you and look forward to sharing our business thoughts with you in the year to come.

From all of us at Floodlight we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with peace and prosperity.

Spending money on technology is an investment, not a cost for business.

Technology enhances business!!

In the latest Microsoft TV commercial Sean Durfy, President and CEO of WestJet, is asked “how do you keep your vision alive?” He says with 7500 employees all over the US and Canada, “we can’t look at everybody’s eyes anymore. We now look at technology as a strategic driver of the company. If you don’t have that, you’re screwed brother”. Wise words!!!!

In today’s business climate, the business owner must understand technology and use it to their advantage to improve efficiencies and even expand operations. However, the use of technology should be balanced with your specific business needs.

Technology allows your business to reach a worldwide audience, yet many business owners take a very short-sighted look at their daily operations and how it affects their business model.
Let’s take a look at some of the basic technology tools to enhance your business activities, and that with a little planning, will take your business to the next level.

Your Computers: I recently purchased a Lenovo laptop and I am very pleased with its performance and it uses less energy than a desktop computer. Today's laptops are right on the heels of desktops when it comes to power and performance, and remember, you can’t beat the convenience. Being stuck in an airport for three hours in Vancouver can become a real pain, but with a laptop you are still connected and productive.

Backup Solutions: It always amazes me how business owners will spend thousands of dollars entertaining their clients but they won’t spend the money to back up their client’s data. Costs of hard drives and backup solutions are at an all time low, so protect your business. The losses of your core data will cripple your business for weeks and possibly end your relationship with your client.

Software: The most cost-effective time to buy software is at the time of your computer purchase. Microsoft and many other software providers offer great incentives and lower cost solutions at time of purchase, which in the long run will save you hundreds of dollars. The appropriate software will enhance your total operation.

Printing Solutions: Today there are many colour laser solutions that truly can enhance all your printed presentations. Company’s like Xerox and others offer an array of solutions for your business needs. I moved to a colour laser two years ago and recouped my investment in less than 4 months with better looking proposals and less time driving to the print shop.

Connectivity: I love the wireless age. It allows me to be mobile and stay in touch with my clients. I enjoy the convenience of sitting on my deck at home and being connected with my clients. I meet my clients at restaurants and coffee shops that offer a wireless service. For a few extra dollars a month your service provider will offer great bundle packages that will enhance your business, office, your home and your mobile experience which will take your business to the next level.

VOIP- (Voice over IP) Small- and medium-sized businesses have perhaps the most to gain from the explosion of new VOIP services. In one move, businesses can outsource their communications, doing away with clunky, on-site PBX equipment and reduce their monthly phone bills. For home business, Skype allows you to reach your clients throughout the world at a very low cost..... It’s free.

Training: So you have all this technology. Now what do you do? People always ask me “How did you learn all this technology?” I educated myself. Over the last twenty years I upgraded my skills by taking training courses on various programs like Microsoft Outlook. The investment has increased my knowledge, skills and competencies and helped to increase productivity and performance, while giving me more control over my decision-making process for my business.

Value added resellers - I like to browse the latest technology at the retail stores and ask about the products, but that is as far as I go. When I am making technology business decisions I like to engage the services of a Value Added Reseller, like
Voda Computer Systems locally, and others who will have firsthand knowledge of the best solution for my business needs. They also have knowledge of the best ways to keep my equipment running efficiently and they offer support plans to keep it operating for years to come.

You may be a small or mid-sized business but that doesn’t mean that you have to operate the business as if you are back in the Stone Age.

Get with it.

The key to a successful business is to do it faster and better – so use Technology to “Build Your Business”.
